Many seismologists (scientists who study earthquakes) believe the injection of waste water from hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is causing these tremors. Fracking is the process of blasting water, sand and chemicals deep into underground rock formations to crack them open to obtain oil and natural gas.

What can possibly be good about this?

  • Oil and natural gas is Oklahoma’s #1 industry

  • Natural gas is safer for the environment

  • Oil and natural gas are dependable resources

  • Fracking for oil and natural gas creates thousands of jobs

So what is so bad about it? Well… Frack is Wack.

  • Many seismologists believe the injection of waste water from fracking is increasing seismic activity.

  • Fracking uses a LOT of water (billions of gallons!)

  • It may contaminate the ground water! (With chemicals such as formaldehyde and mercury)

What IS causing the increase in earthquakes?
